Other Developments

A major project to complete the museum has been the acquisition and re-erection of the engineering building from the former old castle works, Llanelli. Original funding came from the Prism Grant Fund for the preservation of the Industrial and Scientific material to acquire and re-locate an overhead travelling crane of historic interest. Museum volunteers would then restore the crane to working order. The crane tracks were an integral part of the building so the building was acquired at the same time.

This building will create a link so that visitors will be able to progress through more of the Museum while under cover. It will provide a huge area for the display and interpretation of artefacts deteriorating outside and complete the” tinplate story”
To date, the site has been levelled, side columns erected, roof girders added and roof and sides sheeted. The current phase of the project is to close the ends, level the floor, prepare channels and lay electrical cables, put down aggregate and complete a pathway through the building.

This work has been completed in stages over six years with support and grant aid from CYMAL (Museums, Archives and Libraries Wales) funded by the Welsh Assembly. Future work is to install services, move artefacts and develop interpretation. The building will be put to important use in 2010 when the 6th International Conference on Cast Iron will be held at the Museum. This event is held every four years and attracts delegates from many countries.
During this event the Museum will be open to the public with furnaces operating in the new building and a demonstration of iron pouring and casting. Near the date watch out for further information.
